Packers: Former Fifth Round Pick Turning Heads At Safety #3

It has been noted all off-season long that the Packers’ third safety spot is up for grabs.  That was even more solidified when the Packers didn’t take a single defensive back in the 2022 NFL Draft.  Of course this became official after the Packers converted S Tariq Carpenter (7th round pick) to LB after the draft.  However this could all be because the Packers already have someone on the roster who they think can play safety opposite Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.  That guy?  Shawn Davis.

    Who is Safety Shawn Davis?

Shawn Davis is a 5-foot-11, 202-pound rookie out of the University of Florida.  He has been on the Packers’ practice squad since Week 3 of the 2021 season. He was originally selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round (No. 165 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was released following training camp and was on the Colts’ practice squad until Sept. 16. Davis appeared in 37 games with 16 starts for the Florida Gators.  He recorded 124 tackles (76 solo), 5.5 tackles for a loss, 15 passes defensed, five interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He was named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2018 and 2019. Davis wears No. 30 for the Packers.

Competing for the third safety spot will likely be Innis Gaines, Vernon Scott, Tre Sterling, Tariq Carpenter, and Shawn Davis.  Davis was taking snaps as a starting safety next to Savage with Adrian Amos not present. Which as Ryan Wood would point out, would seem to make him the third safety at this time.

“Explosiveness, athletic ability and being able to process. And then continuing to build on ‘call command’ and being able to trust you’re going to put us into the right thing,” Safeties coach Ryan Downard said via Packers Wire. “He’s starting to show all those things, and he’s just continued that this spring.”
Additional comments from beat reporters include:

Matt Schneidman: Also looks like Shawn Davis is the third safety, for now, behind Amos and Savage. He’s been working with the 1s. Vernon Scott and Innis Gaines working on the other side of the field.

Zach Jacobson: Everything we’ve seen and heard out of OTAs and two days of minicamp points to Shawn Davis being the third safety on the Packers’ depth chart. As a renowned safety connoisseur, I’m really intrigued to see what they have there.

Peter Bukowski: 88th percentile burst score for a safety. Dude has almost a 40″ vertical

In conclusion, if early indications show what Shawn Davis can do, the Packers may have a trio of safeties that can contribute in 2022.
