It has been noted all off-season long that the Packers’ third safety spot is up for grabs. That was even more solidified when the Packers didn’t take a single defensive back in the 2022 NFL Draft. Of course this became official after the Packers converted S Tariq Carpenter (7th round pick) to LB after the draft. However this could all be because the Packers already have someone on the roster who they think can play safety opposite Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage. That guy? Shawn Davis.
Who is Safety Shawn Davis?
Shawn Davis is a 5-foot-11, 202-pound rookie out of the University of Florida. He has been on the Packers’ practice squad since Week 3 of the 2021 season. He was originally selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round (No. 165 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was released following training camp and was on the Colts’ practice squad until Sept. 16. Davis appeared in 37 games with 16 starts for the Florida Gators. He recorded 124 tackles (76 solo), 5.5 tackles for a loss, 15 passes defensed, five interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He was named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2018 and 2019. Davis wears No. 30 for the Packers.

Competing for the third safety spot will likely be Innis Gaines, Vernon Scott, Tre Sterling, Tariq Carpenter, and Shawn Davis. Davis was taking snaps as a starting safety next to Savage with Adrian Amos not present. Which as Ryan Wood would point out, would seem to make him the third safety at this time.
