A Packers’ elite running back isn’t getting enough carries

Green Bay Packers elite running back Aaron Jones gave shocking comments following a rough loss in London Sunday. Jones felt the team could have been more successful in key moments running the football against the New York Giants. The Packers threw the ball a lot in the second half as they blew a two-score lead. It’s a little perplexing, giving Jones is having a phenomenal season statistically.

Rodgers has stated that he knows the Packers need to lean on their running backs. But on Sunday, the Packers appeared to neglect a major part of the offense when they needed it. Jones and AJ Dillon accounted for 19 carries and 97 yards against the Giants. Dillon averaged 5.7 yards a carry, and Jones 4.8 yards a carry. Rodgers attempted over double (39) the number of their running plays with passing attempts.

Jones is leading the NFL in this

Jones probably should have had several more touches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Week 5. As Matt Schneidman with The Athletic pointed out, the Packers’ elite running back is averaging the most yards per carry in the NFL, but he’s only getting the 19th most carries this season.

Aaron Jones ranks first among all NFL RBs with 6.39 yards per carry.

He ranks tied for 19th in rushing attempts with 61.

Jones is also matching some of the best running backs of all time in his career.

Jones ranks tied for fourth in NFL history among RBs in yards per rush with 5.2. Only Marion Motley, Nick Chubb and Jamaal Charles are ahead of him. Jones is tied with Jim Brown.

It’s hard to defend the number of passing attempts Rodgers had to Jones carries in the game. Rodgers and head coach Matt LaFleur need to be more aware of this in future games this season. The passing offense isn’t that good this year. As Zach Jacobson with CBS Sports pointed out, Rodgers is off to a slow start this season.

In terms of TDs, Aaron Rodgers is off to his slowest five-game start to a season since 2019 — the first year under Matt LaFleur, which… kinda makes sense. The offense is operating at a similar, shaky pace, but they’re running the ball significantly better. Like, way better.

Be it Rodgers’ age, losing Davante Adams, or having rookie wide receivers, the once Packers’ elite passing game is not good right now. The team probably won’t have one again until they get a top wide receiver from free agency. They will have to rely upon Jones more to the right this ship.
