Green Bay Packers: Dolphins reveal Jeff Hafley’s new hire for offensive coordinator

In his first year as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, former Packers DC Jeff Hafley will not be pilfering a member of Green Bay’s staff for the role of offensive coordinator. Instead, the Dolphins are elevating senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

It will be Slowik’s second stint as an OC after he served in the capacity for the Texans from 2023-24.

Hafley, Slowik team up to lead new era of Dolphins football

Slowik, 38, has coached in the NFL since 2011, when he broke into the league as a defensive assistant with the then-Washington Redskins. Slowik flipped to the opposite side of the ball in San Francisco in 2019, then refocused his efforts in the passing game. His work for the 49ers earned him an opportunity as Houston’s OC.

The Texans fired Slowik following a poor offensive showing in his second season, when his unit finished 22nd in total yards and 19th in points. In year one, Houston ranked 12th and 13th.

That dropoff wasn’t all Slowik’s fault.  Texans quarterback CJ Stroud has regressed significantly since his rookie year in ’23, culminating in a four-pick first-half in this postseason’s Divisional Round loss to the Patriots. Houston also suffered from noteworthy offensive line issues over the past two seasons.

    Green Bay Packers, Jeff Hafley

He won’t necessarily have an easier task for Hafley’s Dolphins. There, team leadership must decide how to handle a touchy situation at quarterback with the costly decline of Tua Tagovailoa. His four-year, $212 million extension carries through the 2028 season, and Miami cannot cut him without incurring a monstrous dead cap hit.

Hafley and the Dolphins will trust Slowik to do a better job running the offense than fired head coach and playcaller Mike McDaniel, who steered the team to a 35-33 mark over four seasons and oversaw what was once a prolific offense before Tagovailoa’s recurring concussions altered the course of the franchise.
