The Green Bay Packers will likely look to continue building out one of the weakest, yet most important, position groups on the roster this offseason.
While general manager Brian Gutekunst, head coach Matt LaFleur and the Packers staff have done a marvelous job surrounding quarterback Jordan Love with young and ascending playmakers on offense, Green Bay may need to continue sinking significant resources into the defense this offseason.
Packers rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper has been a revelation in 2024, and signing safety Xavier McKinney has turned out to be one of the more impactful veteran additions the franchise has made in years.
Given the successes of the McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs signings in free agency, Gutekunst would be wise to continue being aggressive in free agency in 2025, which would be a pretty stark departure from how the organization has operated for decades leading up to this past offseason.
Packers Top Free Agent Target Revealed
The Bleacher Report Scouting Staff put together a list of the top free agent targets for each franchise, including urging the Packers to sign Jets cornerback D.J. Reed this offseason.
“Especially if Jaire Alexander is a cap casualty,” The B/R Scouting Department Writes. “Cornerback will be the top need in Green Bay during free agency and the draft. Eric Stokes’ and Corey Ballentine’s contracts expire as well and the defense could use some help at the position.
“Reed has primarily been a No. 2 corner throughout his career, but the 28-year-old will be one of the top players available at the position. The seven-year veteran has been consistent throughout his career, surrendering no more than two touchdowns per year and racking up at least six pass breakups in each of the last four seasons, per Pro Football Focus.”
Through his first seven seasons, Reed has produced 414 total tackles, two sacks, and intercepted six passes.
Reed could be the kind of player who could be transformational, alongside McKinney, in coordinator Jeff Halfey’s secondary and boost a position of need.
