The Green Bay Packers and general manager Brian Gutekunst haven’t shied away from making bold moves at the top of the market in recent offseasons.
Last winter, the Packers inked running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney to top-of-market free agent contracts, as centerpieces not just of the offseason but as two pivotal pieces as Green Bay continues building out the roster around wunderkind quarterback Jordan Love.
This offseason, Gutekunst will have the opportunity to drop a game-altering wide receiver into Love’s supporting cast. Whether it is making a run at signing Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, or aggressively exploring options on the trade market, the Packers are going to need to find an impact top-of-the depth chart receiver to boost the offense in 2025, and beyond.
Could DK Metcalf be a top Packers Trade Target?
If Gutekunst and the Packers are prioritizing adding a marquee receiver, DK Metcalf could be a name to watch.
SBNation’s Justis Mosqueda suggests that Metcalf is an ideal fit for the Packers and could be in Gutekunst’s sights in the coming weeks.
“NFL executives are already floating Metcalf’s name out there as a possible trade candidate,” Mosqueda writes. “As he’s expected to bring in a new contract within the year. Considering that the Seahawks are $28.5 million over the cap before free agency or the draft, only behind the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints, Seattle is going to have to reshape its roster in some way this offseason.
“Metcalf is one of the league’s biggest perimeter receiver threats when running vertically. Why does that matter? The receiver the Packers generally rely on to take the top off of the defense, Christian Watson, is expected to be out until around Week 12 next season with a torn ACL, per Watson’s own father.”
As Mosqueda points out, Watson’s injury only enhances the Packers’ need to do something at receiver, and Gutekunst’s recent track record suggests Green Bay could be aggressive here.
Metcalf would also be the veteran and dynamic playmaker who can elevate the rest of the weapons on offense, while also hastening Love’s development.
Last season, Seahawks quarterbacks posted a 99 passer rating when targeting Metcalf last season, who had the 10th-highest depth per target across the NFL at 14.3 yards, per Pro Football Focus.
Given his skill-set and the Packers’ need, Metcalf could be a fascinating potential trade target to watch for Green Bay in the coming weeks and months.
