Buoyed by the emergence of rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper into a dynamic and disruptive playmaker, the Green Bay Packers‘ defense is ascending at the most critical juncture of this season, but Jeff Hafley’s unit may have the opportunity to add a legitimate difference-maker just in time for the playoff push.
Cooper made franchise history, becoming the first Packer since Clay Matthews to win Defensive Player of The Week for the second time in one season, and Green Bay’s defense made a statement in Sunday’s 30-13 blowout victory over the NFC West-leading Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday night.
However, with a colossal matchup looming in Week 17 against the surging Minnesota Vikings, there’s a possibility that the Packers could add a future Hall of Famer to the pass-rush in time to potentially elevate this defense to new heights as the postseason looms.
Could the Packers Sign Calais Campbell?
There has been speculation in recent days that the Miami Dolphins could release edge rusher Calais Campbell, if they are officially eliminated from postseason play in the coming days or weeks, which would allow him to sign with a contender.
At age 38, Campbell has never won a Super Bowl ring while garnering All-Pro recognition three times in his career as well as being voted the Walter Payton Man of The Year in 2019.
Needless to say, Campbell would add steady and solid veteran leadership to a young defense while bolstering a front seven that is still looking for consistent and relentless pressure on the quarterback each week.
So far this season, Campbell has logged four sacks, but has 109.5 through his 16-plus season career and has been a solid rotational pass rusher for the Dolphins this season while posting 43 total tackles.
If Cambell becomes available, he could be exactly the caliber of player who elevates the Packers’ defense and a perfect culture fit in Green Bay.
