The Green Bay Packers improved in many areas from 2023-2024. Not only did they have a better record, but their defense improved nearly across the board:
- Points per game: improved from 10th to 6th
- Yards per play: improved from 20th to 5th
- DVOA: Packers improved from 27th to 7th
- EPA/play: improved from 24th to 4th
- Yards per play: improved from 17th to 5th
- Takeaways: improved from 23rd to 4th
- Turnover percentage: improved from 23rd to 3rd
- EPA/dropback: improved from 23rd to 3rd
- EPA/carry: improved from 23rd to 8th
- Yards per carry: improved from 22nd to 3rd
- Passer rating: improved from 25th to 9th
- Tackles for loss: improved from 22nd to 5th
- Scoring percentage: improved from 8th to 5th
- Average net yards/attempt: improved from 25th to 6th
- Yards/completion: improved from 19th to 7th
- Third down%: improved from 25th to 12th
One key player from that defense is likely to get an extension.
Packers’ GM Brian Gutekunst Announces Likely Extension For Full-Time Starter (Report)
Despite not explicitly saying it, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst left open the possibility of exercising the fifth-year option of at least one 2022 first round draft pick:
The Packers believe Walker, the 22nd overall pick in 2022, and Wyatt, the 28th overall pick, are coming off their best seasons in 2024. Gutekunst must now decide whether or not to use the fifth-year option by May 1 of this year. If used, the Packers would be committing millions in guaranteed money into 2026. If not used, Walker and Wyatt would both enter contract years in 2025.
“Super fired up about both those guys’ seasons this year,” Gutekunst said at his season-ending press conference on Thursday.
Walker played 13 games and finished first on the team in tackles with 102, his third straight season with 100 or more. He also set a career-high with nine tackles for loss while adding 2.5 sacks.
Wyatt played in 14 games and produced 32 pressures, third-most on the Packers defense despite playing only 247 pass-rushing snaps.
