The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers know that they will eventually wind up facing off in the playoffs against each other. These two teams have found ways to face off in elimination games since the 1990s.
However, the 2025 off-season could see these two teams essentially swap players.

Green Bay could be looking at swapping Jaire Alexander’s services for a starter from the 49ers:
The 2024 season was one of great personal tragedy for Charvarius Ward, who lost his one-year-old daughter due to a heart defect. He missed five games during the 49ers’ shocking 6-11 campaign, and he’s spoken openly about the possible need for a change of scenery.
If Ward returns to the level of production he found in 2023, some team will be getting a fantastic player. The 49ers may have to hope he doesn’t land with an NFC squad that could threaten them in future postseason battles.
On Wednesday, The Athletic insider Matt Schneidman named Ward as a fit for the Green Bay Packers, who are likely to cut ties this spring with their own star cornerback, Jaire Alexander.
“Cutting or trading cornerback Jaire Alexander – it might be difficult to find a trade partner since teams know the Packers are probably moving on from him – would free up about $6.8 million in cap space if done before June 1, according to Over the Cap,” Schneidman wrote.
“There are some intriguing options in free agency: (the San Francisco 49ers’) Charvarius Ward… among others.”
After their 11-6 season, the Packers will do all they can to keep up in the NFC North arms race, as the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings both finished ahead of them in the standings. Ward could be a top target based on their obvious need at his position.
The 49ers will always wish Ward well after he gave his all to the organization and dealt with something unthinkable while playing for the team. They’ll just have to hope he doesn’t come back to haunt them if he winds up with a contender like the Packers.
If San Francisco loses Ward, and Green Bay releases Alexander, it is likely he would sky rocket to the top of San Francisco’s list.
It is unclear what the future holds between Green Bay and Jaire Alexander, but a resolution is likely the best option. If not, Ward could be an outstanding addition for this defense.
