The Green Bay Packers have some work to do this offseason. One of their priorities this offseason, at least according to general manager Brian Gutekunest, is to work out a scenario in which Aaron Jones returns to the team next season. Presently, Jones is set to count for $20 million against the salary cap. This is a substantial sum; however, the Packers have proven they are able to get creative to keep the players that they want. That being said, here are three reasons why the Packers should keep Aaron Jones.
1. Aaron Jones and the Packers Have Mutual Interest
Yes, Jones is under contract with the Packers. Nothing could happen with his contract and he would be expected back in 2023. However, we have seen many circumstances throughout the NFL in which players under contract publicly lobbied for a trade or sat out.
That is not Aaron Jones’ style. He has stated that he loves Green Bay and wants to be back. Gutekunst has said the Packers expect him to back. In an offseason full of question marks, it is a huge positive that the team’s third all-time leading rusher wants to return.
2. Aaron Jones Just Put Together a Pro Bowl Caliber Season
No, Aaron Jones is not going to the Pro Bowl. The fact that he was snubbed could be an entirely different article, but I digress…
In 2022, Jones rushed for a career-high 1,121 yards. Amazingly, he did so on 213 rushing attempts, which is not most rushing attempts he has had in a season. Jones rushed the ball 236 times back in 2019 during his first 1,000+ yard season.
In addition to his rushing numbers, Jones hauled in a career-high 59 receptions for 395 yards. His receiving yards total is the second-highest of his career. Jones had 474 receiving yards back in 2019.
In all, Jones had 1,516 total yards this season. This total is just 42 yards off of 1,558 in 2019.
3. The Packers Need Weapons on Offense
I think that we can all agree that the Green Bay offense did not, as a whole, perform up to the standards it set for itself this offseason. There were certainly some nice aspects, such as how dominant a healthy offensive line looked later in the season. Christian Watson was an amazing piece after he got over the rookie wall. Of course, Jones and AJ Dillon were once again one of the best running back duos in the NFL.
This offseason, though, could see a few more offensive players leave Green Bay. Allen Lazard, Robert Tonyan, and Randall Cobb are all free agents. This is not to say that they all will leave, but who knows? Of course, there are also numerous questions surrounding the quarterback situation in Green Bay.
Those questions are not the point, though. Regardless of if the quarterback is Aaron Rodgers or Jordan Love, this offense is going to be missing some old faces. Would it not make sense, then, to keep your team’s most dangerous offensive weapon on the roster?
It does to me, and I hope it does at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.
