The Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey program has added an exciting name into their coaching mix in Nick Oliver. He was the head coach of the Fargo Force and was announced as the new assistant coach under head coach Mike Hastings. Oliver’s impressive track record as a player and coach, coupled with his ability to foster meaningful relationships with his players, makes him a valuable addition to the team. With his appointment, the Badgers are poised to continue their pursuit of excellence on the ice.

Oliver’s Accomplishments Before the Wisconsin Badgers

Nick Oliver’s coaching journey has been marked by success and accolades. In his first year as head coach of the Fargo Force, he led the team to 40 victories and amassed a league-best 88 points. This performance earned the franchise its first Anderson Cup as USHL regular-season champions. Oliver’s achievements were recognized as he was named the USHL Coach of the Year. The Force’s success carried over into the postseason, where they reached the Clark Cup Final, further solidifying Oliver’s coaching prowess.

Prior to his tenure in Fargo, Oliver served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Cloud State. During his four seasons with the Huskies, Oliver played a vital role in the team’s 81-44-9 record. His coaching contributions helped St. Cloud State capture an NCHC regular-season title, secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and make an appearance in the Frozen Four. In 2021, the team achieved its first NCAA championship game appearance, with Oliver providing invaluable support from behind the bench. Before joining St. Cloud State, Oliver gained experience as an assistant coach and director of scouting with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL from 2015 to 2018.

Oliver’s Coaching Philosophy Heading to the Wisconsin Badgers

Nick Oliver’s coaching philosophy revolves around developing strong relationships with his players and fostering an environment that cultivates success both on and off the ice, especially after what Hayes said of him: “Nick has earned the reputation as one of the best young coaches in our game through his work ethic and ability to develop meaningful relationships with his players.”

Oliver’s work ethic and dedication to player development make him an ideal addition to the Badgers men’s hockey program.

Expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm, Oliver shared his thoughts on joining the Wisconsin Badgers: “I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to work with Coach Hastings, Coach (Todd) Knott and the rest of the UW staff. I’m looking forward to start building relationships with our players and for the opportunity to honor the many people who have come before us in this program. My family and I can’t wait to get to Madison and join the Badger Family.”

    A Strong Coaching Staff

Nick Oliver’s addition to the coaching staff of the Badgers further strengthens an already impressive lineup of coaches. The team boasts the expertise of Mike Hastings, a three-time Spencer Penrose Award winner for national coach of the year and five-time conference coach of the year, along with Todd Knott, who was honored with the 2023 American Hockey Coaches Association’s Terry Flanagan Award for his exceptional career as an assistant coach. With this coaching core at the helm, the Wisconsin Badgers are well-positioned to excel in the seasons to come.

The appointment of Nick Oliver as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey program brings a wealth of experience and success to the team, where the team has been struggling the past few years. The Badgers haven’t done much in terms of success outside of the flash in the pan 2020-21 season. The Badgers hope with this change in coaching leadership that they’ll start to return to the success of old.

Oliver’s remarkable coaching journey, characterized by achievements and recognition, demonstrates his ability to develop players and lead them to victory. Oliver’s commitment to building meaningful relationships with his players aligns perfectly with the program’s values and sets the stage for continued excellence on and off the ice. With a formidable coaching staff, the Wisconsin Badgers are poised to achieve new heights in the world of college hockey.
