The Milwaukee Brewers have been dealing with a series of injuries that would cripple any other team. Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain remain on the IL. Corbin Burnes was just put on the IL, presumably with COVID-19. In all, 16 players on the Brewers roster have been on or are still on the IL. Despite all these injuries, the Brewers are tied with the San Francisco Giants for the best record in the National League. After the Brewers’ second straight win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, they will look to win the series today behind the arm of Brandon Woodruff.
Brewers’ Starting Pitcher: Brandon Woodruff
Brandon Woodruff will take the mound in the third game of this four game series against the Dodgers. In the past, the Woodruff has struggled against the Dodgers. He has a 5.82 ERA in six starts against them (regular season and post season combined). However, the only current Dodger who can play tomorrow that has ever gotten a hit off of Woodruff is Corey Seager. Seager has two hits in three at bats against him. Austin Barnes, Max Muncy, Justin Turner, and Chris Taylor are a combined 0/8 against Woodruff.
In five starts this season, Woodruff is 2-0 with a 1.55 ERA. Currently, Woodruff has a 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings ratio. Coincidentally, that is the same ratio he had in 2019 when he made his first and only All-Star team. Woodruff also is allowing just four hits per nine innings pitched, the best mark in the National League.
Dodgers’ Starting Pitcher: Dustin May
Last season was Dustin May’s rookie season, and he pitched extremely well. The right-hander went 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 12 games (10 starts). He finished fifth in the National League’s Rookie of the Year vote. Of course, the award was won by Brewers’ relief pitcher Devin Williams.
This year, May has picked up right where he left off. He is currently 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA. In his most recent start, May struck out 10 batters, a career high. Avisail Garcia has a hit in his only at bat against May, and Urias has one hit in five at bats. The only other Brewer that has faced May is Kolten Wong, who is 0/2 against him.
