The NFL 2021 season is still several months away, yet some can already pick out a few teams that are considered contenders, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Those two come as no surprise, but there are many other teams flying under the radar that may raise some eyebrows this season. Here are some of the teams that could accomplish that in the 2021 season.
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos were a really talented team hit by injuries in 2020. The defense is going to cause some problems this season, now that Von Miller is coming back along with Bradley Chubb. Furthermore, underrated safety Justin Simmons re-signed to a long term deal. Another key addition from this offseason is cornerback Kyle Fuller, who understands head coach Vic Fangio’s defense from their time in Chicago.
The Broncos also have stud receivers in Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy and a top offensive tackle in Garrett Boles, who recently signed a long term deal. If quarterback Drew Lock can make a jump in his development, this team can turn some heads in 2021.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott to a career-altering ankle injury last season.
Despite this, he still signed a massive contract to return to Dallas this offseason, and looks to be healthy in 2021.
With him back the Cowboys have a stake for the NFC East title. They have a solid wide receiver corps of Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb. With Ezekiel Elliot at running back, and an offensive line returning from injury, Dallas has arguably one of the best offenses in the league.
Now, the defense last season was very bad and needs to be fixed. They have an offense that can put up plenty of points per game, but their defense is seemingly the only factor holding them back. If the defense can be at least above average, the Cowboys are easily a contending team.
New York Giants
2020 saw the rise of the New York Giants’ stellar defense.
On the other side of the ball, the offense was abysmal and was one of the worst in the NFL, which was the target of the Giants’ offseason. They added wide receiver Kenny Golladay to give Daniel Jones a bonafide number-one wide receiver, signed Kyle Rudolph to go along with Evan Engram at tight end, and also await the return of Saquon Barkley from his ACL tear last September.
New York’s offensive line still needs some work, but the weapons at the skill positions are there. If Daniel Jones can take a step in his development this year, the Giants have the potential to make a serious run.
Los Angeles Chargers
Throughout team history, the Chargers have had loads of talent across the board, especially in the last couple of years.
Their downfall (from a historical standpoint): the coaching staff.
Many years of bad coaching has squandered many talented Chargers teams. They need someone to take control of the talent they have.
Enter Brandon Staley, the new head coach.
A defensive specialist, Staley has two young stars on defense in safety Derwin James and defensive lineman Joey Bosa, the team has their franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert, who won Offensive Rookie of the Year, and they signed offensive linemen like former Packers’ center Corey Linsley to protect their franchise quarterback.
There are no more excuses for the Los Angeles Chargers. They cannot continue to waste the talent they have. They are simply too talented for that.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers missed the Super Bowl by one game over the last two seasons.
They have the chance to be even better in 2021.
The only big loss from the team was the center Corey Linsley. He will be difficult to replace, as he was an all-pro center in 2020. Besides Linsley, nearly the whole team in 2020 will be returning in 2021, which will keep team chemistry alive. The offense was the number one scoring offense in the league last season, and will have all of the guys from last year coming back.
The Packers’ defense was top ten in total yards allowed last season, and now have a new defensive coordinator. Mike Pettine did not use the players he had to their full potential in his time as defensive coordinator. He is now replaced by Joe Barry, who was on the coaching staff of the Rams defense that was the best in the NFL last year. I believe he can unleash the defense that will make the Packers a dangerous team. The Packers are going to be a better team in 2021.
