An NFL Scout has advice for the Packers
The Green Bay Packers should feel much better about their prospects at wide receiver than they did the day Davante Adams was traded. The Packers’ offense relied on their veteran wide receivers to start the season. But recently, rookie Christian Watson has taken off and caught the NFL analyst world by storm. One NFL scout has opinions on this team and what they should do in the future.
Romeo Doubs and Watson have had spectacular moments this season. They’ve also traded weeks being off with injuries. But the two wide receivers seem to be high-quality starters that may offer an upgrade to the Packers over Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Sammy Watkins. It was important for the Packers to hit on Doubs and Watson on their rookie deals this year, as they have limited cap space next season.
Pete Dougherty with the Green Bay Press-Gazette recently spoke with an NFL scout for a piece on Watson’s emergence helping the Packers’ future outlook. The scout thinks the Packers are in a great place with Doubs and Watson but could add one more young pass-catcher:
“I think you have to feel pretty good about it,” said a high-ranking scout for another NFL team of the Packers’ receiving corps. “Two young, fast guys. You need somebody else, but if they can draft those two guys, they can draft other guys. Other than Amari Rodgers they’ve done a decent job (drafting) at that position.”
The jury might still be out on Amari Rodgers. But the scout is correct that one more wide receiver could make the offense dangerous.
The Packers could go wide receiver early in the 2023 draft
The Packers need a little more juice at a few positions on the team. The Packers could use their higher picks to help bolster the pass rush at the edge position. The offensive line could use help, especially with Elgton Jenkins and David Bahktiari’s futures being unclear.
However, the Packers will need to weigh these decisions against their decision at quarterback this offseason. Aaron Rodgers might not want to work with another green wide receiver next year if he stays for one season. Jordan Love might need another wide receiver or tight end to help his game. Or the Packers could consider fortifying the defense or offensive line to take the pressure off Love in his first year as a starter.
If the Packers use their first pick on a wide receiver this draft. This should make the job of Rodgers’ eventual successor much easier. It’s certainly a move general manager Brian Gutekunst should entertain.
