The Green Bay Packers, once again, did not draft a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft. That isn’t to say they didn’t try. Indeed, the Packers attempted to trade up to Pick 32 using their two second round picks. The Minnesota Vikings, though, did not want to allow the Packers to have a fifth year option with whomever they picked. Instead, the Packers traded to pick 34 (with the Vikings) and took Christian Watson, who they wanted to target at pick 32. According to NFL Analysis Network, one NFL scout believes that Green Bay is the perfect team for Watson.
The NFL Scout Made a Bold Prediction about Christian Watson
When speaking with the NFL Analysis Network, the scout stated: “This is the perfect fit for Christian (Watson). There was no other place that would have been a better fit for him. I’m expecting a massive rookie season for him and if the Packers don’t pick up another veteran wideout, he’ll end the year as their clear-cut No. 1 target.”
Could Christian Watson Be the Packers Number One WR?
The Green Bay Packers have veterans Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, and Allen Lazard on their roster. They also have second-year wideout Amari Rodgers. In addition to Christian Watson, the Packers also drafted wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Samouri Toure.
That is certainly a crowded room, but one that Watson could emerge to be the leader of in 2022. Despite playing in a run-first offense at North Dakota State, Watson was able to put up big numbers on few targets. In 2019, Watson had just 34 receptions, but put up 743 yards and six touchdowns. In 11 games that season, he averaged just over three catches per game. In 2021, Watson had 43 receptions for 801 yards and seven touchdowns. In 12 games, he averaged less than four receptions per game.
As mentioned, Watson was not the primary focus of the North Dakota State offense. As a run-first offense, his opportunities were few. However, he made the most of them, averaging 21.5 yards per reception in 2019 and 18.6 yards per reception in 2021. With Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball, there is no doubt Watson can improve upon these numbers.
