There are several legitimate concerns surrounding the 2023 Green Bay Packers ahead of the regular season. Many wonder if Jordan Love will be worth ostracizing and then trading future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Will Joe Barry finally get his defense, loaded with eight first round picks, to play up to their potential? Did the Packers do the right thing by not signing a veteran wide receiver?
Of course, the wide receiver question is big one considering that it is Love’s first year as a starter. When Rodgers took over, he had veterans like Greg Jennings and Donald Driver to throw to. In addition, he had second-year wide receiver James Jones and rookie Jordy Nelson.
Love has second-year players Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure to go with rookies Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Grant DuBose. Unproven though they may be, the wide receiver room is flush with talent and potential.
One NFL writer, though, does not believe so.
NFL Writer Claims Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Room Has No Talent
In an article ranking each NFL team, Bleacher Report writer Gary Davenport was quoted as saying that Green Bay lacks talent altogether at the wide receiver position:
“The Packers’ lack of talent at receiver is alarming, although Christian Watson appears to have what it takes to be a go-to target,” he said. “But the Packers are a decent defensive team, and Love has a talented duo of backs to lean on in Dillon and Aaron Jones. It’s not like there’s a runaway favorite in the NFC North this year, and Love has shown some promise in limited action.
“Can I say with certainty the Packers will contend this year? No. But I can’t say they won’t, either.”
This quote is confusing. How can a wide receiver room, that includes Watson, lack talent; but Watson also appears to have what it takes to be a go-to target?
A lack of unproven talent? Most certainly. There is no arguing that. None of the Packers’ returning wide receivers have completed a full 17-game season without being inactive or injured for a few games. But to lack talent altogether? No. That’s not true at all.
It is interesting to note, though, that he believes the Packers can be competitive this season. He stops short of saying they will, but he makes a good point about the NFC North being wide open this year.
Anything can happen, and the talented young pass catchers are going to surprise a lot of people this year.
