NFL News: The Green Bay Packers are in the midst of one of the most significant off-seasons in franchise history. Not only did they move on from one of the best players in franchise history in Aaron Rodgers, but the flurry of free-agent departures made them one of the youngest teams in the NFL. In fact, the Packers only have three players on their roster over the age of 30. However, one former NFL GM suggested that a fourth player over the age of 30 would be huge for this team.
Former NFL GM Rick Spielman Says The Green Bay Packers Need To Add QB Teddy Bridgewater
Former NFL General Manager Rick Spielman suggested that the Green Bay Packers sign veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater for the 2023 NFL Season:
Teddy Bridgewater is one of the league’s premier backup quarterbacks. We drafted him in Minnesota in 2014. The next season, he took us to an 11-5 record and the playoffs. We lost to the Seattle Seahawks in a wild-card game in 17-below-zero weather at the University of Minnesota’s stadium.
In 2016, he suffered a significant knee injury that kept him out for almost two seasons. He went on to be a backup in New Orleans, and when Drew Brees got hurt, Bridgewater led the Saints to a 5-0 record.
Last season, he was with the Miami Dolphins and went 0-2 in his starts. He battled knee injuries and the pinkie on his throwing hand bothered him most of the season. Bridgewater is a smart and excellent leader. He has enough mobility that he can read through his progressions and get the ball out, but he’s more of a game manager now.
Two landing spots stick out for Bridgewater when considering most teams want to look at their young options first.
Everyone knows what Justin Herbert is capable of, but his backups with the Los Angeles Chargers are Easton Stick and rookie Max Duggan. God forbid Herbert got hurt. I don’t know if I would trust those two because this is such an important season for the Chargers.
The other team is the Green Bay Packers, who are starting the Jordan Love era. Behind him, they have rookie Sean Clifford, who they drafted in the fifth round but many viewed as a college free agent, and Danny Etling, who was a free agent from LSU a few years ago. Teams will be patient with their young quarterbacks, but don’t be surprised if one of these teams signs Bridgewater.
This Isn’t The First Time That The Green Bay Packers Have Been Linked To Teddy Bridgewater
The Green Bay Packers have been linked to Teddy Bridgewater many times before, and it makes sense as to why. When Tagovailoa went down with concussion issues, Bridgewater started two games. Miami was 0-2 in those contests, but Bridgewater was not bad. He threw for four touchdowns and four interceptions while carrying a passer rating of 85.6.
When he was the backup for New Orleans in 2019, Bridgewater had to make five starts. The Saints won all five, and he threw nine touchdowns and two interceptions while posting a quarterback rating of 99.1.
The problem with the idea of signing a veteran, though, is that Green Bay is really dedicated to the youth movement that they have started. If they wanted a veteran quarterback to backup Love, they would have gotten one already.
Furthermore, the Packers are ever a cap-conscious organization. If they can save money on this year’s and next year’s cap by keeping either Clifford or Etling as their backup, that is what they will do.
