Matt LaFleur wanted to keep the Green Bay Packers quarterback roster to three during OTAs. The configuration could look different for the training camp with a workout the team held Tuesday.
The Packers plan to hand over the keys to Jordan Love after trading Aaron Rodgers. Danny Etling and rookie Sean Clifford are battling to be Love’s backup this fall. LaFleur said he kept the quarterback room at three during OTAs so they didn’t have to split reps amongst four quarterbacks.
However, days before the Packers training camp is set to begin, the team is doing its due diligence for the position.
Green Bay Packers work out former Seattle Seahawks draft pick
According to Aaron Wilson with KPRC, the Packers are working out USFL quarterback Alex McGough Tuesday.

McGough has had an impressive run for the Birmingham Stallions. He’s led the Stallions to back-to-back league championships. McGough won the USFL MVP for 2023.
McGough threw for 2,104 yards, 20 touchdowns, and had five interceptions this past season. He was scary to defend in the running game, as he tacked on another 403 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

McGough has NFL experience. The Seattle Seahawks drafted the former FIU quarterback in the seventh round of the 2018 draft. He has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. His last season in the NFL was with the Seahawks in 2021.
We’ll see if McGough can impress LaFleur and his staff enough to earn a roster spot before camp. Even if he doesn’t, we know the Packers staff is interested in exploring options at the quarterback position during the preseason. LaFleur had said before OTAs he wanted to see if the Packers needed another veteran quarterback added before camp.
As of Tuesday, the Packers are open to it.
