NFL News: The Green Bay Packers have already been the center of massive trades over the last two off-seasons. Last year the Packers shipped Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders for multiple premium draft picks. This off-season was highlighted by the franchise-altering Aaron Rodgers trade that sent him to the New York Jets. There seems to be growing talk of one more big trade that involves another offensive weapon for the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay Packers Running Back AJ Dillon Named In Trade Talks (NFL News)
Freddie Boston published an article that highlighted an AJ Dillon trade scenario brought on by the Pack-A-Day Podcast. Andy Herman had some pretty interesting comments regarding a possible AJ Dillon trade scenario:
“I think it would take an injury to another team’s starting running back,” Herman said. “They look at AJ Dillon’s tape and say, ‘Hey, when this guy actually gets to be the guy, he’s been pretty darn good.’ It’s when he has to be the secondary guy and just get a handful of snaps here and there and doesn’t get into a rhythm, that’s where he’s maybe not quite as good.”
AJ Dillon has been a battering ram for the Green Bay Packers offense ever since he was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. What type of interest would a battering ram like Dillon draw from the rest of the league?
What Would An AJ Dillon Trade Look Like And Would The Green Bay Packers Be Interested?
The Green Bay Packers have one of the better one-two punches at running back in the NFL. Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon compliment each other extremely well. In 2021, the Green Bay Packers running back duo achieved the rare feat of each eclipsing 1,000 all-purpose yards. Last season, Dillon fell just 24 yards short of 1,000 all-purpose yards while Jones had a career-high 1,121 rushing yards to go with 395 receiving yards (for a grand total of 1,516 all-purpose yards, the second-best total of his career).
Earlier this off-season AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones were named the best running back duo going into the 2023 NFL season. Why would the Green Bay Packers break that up in a year where their QB play could be questionable? The only answer would be an immediate return of draft picks or a player that could help them win in the long-term.
It also has to be noted that running backs aren’t valued on the open market as much as they should be. Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Elliot were both released this off-season because the Vikings and Cowboys couldn’t find the right trade suitor. It also looks like Brandon Jacobs of the Las Vegas Raiders could be on the move soon as he has made it clear he doesn’t want to play on his franchise tag.
Tyler Goodson COULD Allow The Green Bay Packers To Trade AJ Dillon In The Future
One intriguing factor that could surface over the next year is the development of third-string running back Tyler Goodson. Goodson was an un-drafted free agent out of Iowa last season. With Jones and Dillon not playing in preseason games, he received plenty of touches and impressed at times. He impressed the Packers enough for them to retain him on their practice squad last season. Head coach Matt LaFleur thinks Goodson is setting himself of success as well:
“He’s got a much better grasp of the expectations of what it takes to be a pro. He’s got two great examples in that (running back) room…I think that’s a huge help in that room.”
If Goodson shows in 2023 that he could be a workhorse in this offense, the Green Bay Packers could be afforded some options in the trade market at running back as they’ll have to either release or sign AJ Dillon after the 2023 NFL season.
