NFL News: DeAndre Hopkins has been one of the most talked-about names during the 2023 NFL off-season. The Arizona Cardinals released the All-Pro wide receiver during OTAs. The New England Patriots and the Tennessee Titans have already shown significant interest in the All-Pro wide receiver, the Titans even had a contract offer on the table before he left Tennessee. It is likely that Hopkins won’t have a new team for quite some time though.
DeAndre Hopkins Likely Won’t Make A Decision For Another Month (NFL News)
During a recent appearance on NBC Sports, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer delivered a hold-your-horses reminder that the deal may take longer than fans want.
“What this tells me … is that he’s still holding out hope that he’s going to play for a contender – a true contender like Buffalo or Kansas City,” Breer said. “The one thing you want to watch here: Kansas City has almost no cap space. They’re working on a long-term deal for Chris Jones, their star defensive tackle, to lower his cap number. If that happens, the door could open back up for him going back to the Chiefs.”
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Hopkins could wait until late July, just ahead of NFL training camps, before he finally makes a decision. And given that OTAs have concluded across the NFL, there really is no benefit in rushing.
Could The Green Bay Packers Still Target DeAndre Hopkins For Jordan Love?
DeAndre Hopkins holding out to choose where he wants to sign certainly keeps the door open for other teams to show interest. However, Hopkins likely wants to play for a contender and until Love shows what he can do in this league, free agents might be skewed. However, the Packers could be an upgrade for DeAndre Hopkins if general manager Brian Gutekunst wants to be aggressive in the wide receiver market.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has said he’d prefer the Packers have a veteran wide receiver for Jordan Love to throw to. Love would certainly benefit from Hopkins’ big frame to target in pressure situations. Early in the 2023 off-season, the Green Bay Packers were even the favorite to land Hopkins. The Packers currently have more than $16 million in cap space. The ability to sign a veteran wide receiver is certainly there.
