NFL: The Green Bay Packers are going to have a completely different-looking offense in 2023. Jordan Love and a plethora of young offensive weapons look to start the new era for the Packers on the right note. With the departure of Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis this off-season, the Packers will be looking for their new first-string tight end. As it turns out, they may have already identified one.
Luke Musgrave Identified As “Likely” TE1 Come Week One Of The NFL Season
According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
The most likely answer is Luke Musgrave, the rookie second-round pick from Oregon State, but the Packers have two intriguing rookies in both Musgrave and third-round pick Tucker Kraft from South Dakota State.
We’re about to find out whether either of them can block worth a lick — doing so is a vital skill to have at the position in coach Matt LaFleur’s offense — but both offer an enticing profile as pass catchers. The Packers haven’t had a supremely athletic pass-catching tight end since perhaps Jermichael Finely in his prime, but they hope to have found two in this year’s draft.
What Will Luke Musgrave Bring To The Green Bay Packers Offense?
The knock on Luke Musgrave coming into the NFL Draft was that his 2022 seasons was cut short by a knee injury. However, teams (especially the Packers) seemed satisfied with how it has healed. Musgrave used the combine, Senior Bowl, and top 30 visits to prove to teams that he was still worthy of being a quality prospect. It obviously worked. Now, he will be a vital player in the Packers’ offense as he replaces Robert Tonyan, who signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency.
The question is: how can Musgrave help the Packers immediately? According to PFF, Musgrave 63.4 receiving grade in 2021, his last full season. In the two games he was able to play in 2022, Musgrave had a 79.2 receiving grade and led Oregon State in receiving yards. Had he not gotten injured, he would have been one of nation’s leaders in receiving yards by a tight end. In other words, he will be just another receiving weapon for Jordan Love to target in the middle of the field and in the red zone.
Musgrave is known for his catching ability, sure, but his speed at the tight end position also makes him a dangerous weapon on offense.
