The Green Bay Packers offense is not off to a good start after one week of training camp. Head coach Matt LaFleur likes to end practices with 11-on-11 competitions between the offense and the defense. Thus far, the defense has won every single one of them.
To be fair, it has not been all Jordan Love‘s fault. While the first couple of days saw him struggle, weekend practices were reported to be electric and some of the best football he has ever played since coming to Green Bay. Still, mental errors by the young pass catchers led to more punishment for the offense.
And Love is frustrated.
Jordan Love Expresses Frustration with the Green Bay Packers Offense
Tuesday’s practice was more of the same. Impressive play from the new starting quarterback, but errors by the offense led to another win for the defense. Afterwards, Love was asked about the offense’s struggles, and he admitted to be frustrated by it:
“It’s very frustrating. I think we’re all very tired of it. Kudos to the defense, but obviously it’s disappointing as an offense. Collectively, as a whole, it’s definitely an area we need to step up.”
There is something noteworthy in that statement that has gone overlooked by many Packers fans. While Love is definitely frustrated, he did not call out any single players for mental mistakes.
This is a great difference from his predecessor, Aaron Rodgers, who would point out specific mistakes by players as reasons why the team struggled.
If there is any consolation, it is that the Packers offense is incredibly young while their defense is composed of numerous veterans. It makes sense for the offense to struggle early while the experienced defense takes advantage of “rookie” mistakes.
And it’s only been one week. But the mistakes need to stop sometime. Love is finally the starting quarterback after three years of learning from one of the game’s best. During that time, he learned a great deal. And it appears one of those things is that his teammates will respond better if he does not single them out in the media.
We’ll see if it works.
