The New York Jets contract restructures have begun as the team has contacted the agents of their largest contracts. CJ Mosley, DJ Reed, and John Franklin-Myers have all been contacted by the Jets to restructure their contracts and open cap room for the 2023 season. These restructures come at a crucial time, as the Jets ownership has met with Aaron Rodgers recently regarding a potential trade. A trade cannot happen unless the Jets relieve some of their cap troubles to fit Rodgers’ contract.
New York Jets Contract Restructures Begin: Is Rodgers Gone?
As the New York Jets begin to creatively make room for a massive contract, the reality of Aaron Rodgers leaving Green Bay seems closer than ever. Rodgers recently met with Woody Johnson, the New York Jets owner, and has also been heavily recruited by Jets players like Sauce Gardner. The intensity of the situation has continued to heat up over the last few days, and now with money coming off the books the Jets seem to be positioning themselves for the trade.

The Jets have already spoken to CJ Uzomah’s contract and cut Braxton Berrios as well to open up cap space. The trade for Chuck Clark may also lead to the Jets cutting Jordan Whitehead to release $10.2 million from the books. However, it may be unlikely unless the Jets can find another safety or re-sign Lamarcus Joyner. Now, the team has shifted their focus to the other large contracts that are taking up the majority of their cap space.
Green Bay Packers News: Not So Fast for the New York Jets?
New York can clear up to $20 million from their books through restructures with Reed, Mosley, and Franklin-Myers. However, they can only do so by affecting their cap in other years due to the length of each contract. Reed currently has a cap hit of $14.1 million, but the Jets would be able to clear up to $4.9 million from their cap with a restructure. Doing so would bring Reed’s cap hit in 2024 to just over $19 million.
'Tis restructuring week in the #NFL. The #Jets are reaching out to agents. C.J. Mosley, John Franklin-Myers and D.J. Reed are candidates as the team attempts to clear cap space for free agency + potential Rodgers add.

CJ Mosley is in a similar situation to that of DJ Reed, as his cap hit is currently the highest on the Jets at $21.4 million. The Jets would be able to clear $10.5 million in cap space for 2023, but would bring Mosley’s cap hit in 2024 to $25.4 million. This would also be the second contract restructure that Mosley has gone through in the last seven months.

The Jets certainly have the resources and opportunities to make a trade for Aaron Rodgers upfront financially. However, the issue becomes whether or not they can afford the impact of his contract for years to come. The Jets do not have many one-year assets that they can afford to cut for cap space, like Braxton Berrios. Now the Jets must continue to push money into the future to pay their current players, who will no longer be with the team when those payments go through.
Amid their contract restructures, the Jets will have to decide how much money they can put into the future before they jeopardize being able to pay for their young core. Money is starting to seriously run thin for the Jets, but the movement signifies that Aaron Rodgers is certainly within their grasp.
