The New York Jets landed Aaron Rodgers and are now feeling like Super Bowl favorites. The Jets have not been shy this week about their feelings about Rodgers and what he brings to the team. However, it isn’t all good in New York. One of their young stars is in line for a new contract. With the amount of money that Rodgers’ contract comes with, the pursuit of the quarterback may have cost them defensive star, Quinnen Williams.
New York Jets Get Aaron Rodgers; Lose Quinnen Williams?
Williams is in line for a contract extension and he definitely deserves it. He was First Team All-Pro last year racking up 55 combined tackles (35 solo, 20 assisted), 28 quarterback hits, 12 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, four defended passes, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. The market for defensive tackles is set. Daron Payne, Jeffery Simmons, and Dexter Lawrence have all gotten extensions this offseason. It’s clear what the Jets need to pay him. The question is whether they can. According to reports, the sides are very far apart so this situation is slated to drag on for awhile.
What Is The Risk With Williams?
On the one hand, Williams is still under contract for another season and the franchise tag would allow for two more. The risk with this is that Williams becomes upset at the team and decides to take his chances in free agency. Often, teams want to get extensions done because it shows the player that they are committed to him long-term. If the Jets decide to kick the can down the road, it could cost them. If Williams walks or holds out, it would be a massive blow to the team.

Balancing everything in the NFL is hard. Everyone wants to get paid and get their fair share. Williams most likely wants to win a Super Bowl but also is looking for his second contract. On the side of the Packers, it would be a little bit funny if the Jets being so focused on Rodgers cost them a young star. This will be a situation that will be interesting to watch unfold as the offseason goes on.
