The New York Giants are trying to pull off the upset against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. The Giants (4-8) have suffered a number of horrendous injuries this season, headlined by starting quarterback Daniel Jones’ torn ACL.
The Green Bay Packers have had their fair share of injuries as well, however, their franchise quarterback Jordan Love has remained healthy all season long. If the Giants want to pull off the upset, it would appear they will have to do so without their pro bowl tight end.
The New York Giants Will Be Without Pro Bowl Tight End Darren Waller For Monday Night Matchup Against The Green Bay Packers
According to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk:
Giants tight end Darren Waller has not played since late October due to a hamstring injury. But coming out of New York’s bye week, Waller is nearing a return.
Via Dan Duggan of TheAthletic.com, Waller said on Wednesday that he’s been running routes and his hamstring is feeling good. He’s expecting to return to practice next week and hopes that he’ll be able to play against the Saints on Dec. 17 if all goes well.
Waller has appeared in eight games this year, catching 36 passes for 384 yards with a touchdown. His most productive game was on Oct. 22 when the Giants defeated the Commanders 14-7. He caught seven passes for 98 yards with his lone touchdown of the year that day.
Since catching 107 passes for 1,196 yards with nine touchdowns in 2020 for the Raiders, Waller has battled through injuries over the last few seasons. In 2022, he caught just 28 passes for 388 yards with three touchdowns in nine games. Las Vegas traded him to New York in March.
Waller’s Return Date Will Be After Packers Clash On Monday Night
The Packers rank ninth in the NFL in points allowed per game. Meanwhile the Giants rank dead last in yards per game on offense. It will be interesting to see how Joe Barry utilizes the pass rush against a team who struggles to move the ball and who is missing their top tight end.
Additionally, the Packers are coming off a Sunday Night Football Matchup where they held Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to 19 points. If the Packers are able to get after Tommy DeVito it could be a long day for the Giants offense.
