The Milwaukee Bucks have a significant depth issue heading into the new season. This is brought about by the fact that Jrue Holiday remains to be the only natural point guard on their roster. The Bucks re-signed incoming second-year guard A.J. Green to a new deal, and while he will likely be given the chance to be Jrue’s primary backup, Green is actually a shooting guard.
The Bucks may have solved this conundrum on Tuesday after they decided to sign former Kentucky standout TyTy Washington Jr. to a two-way deal. He’s by no means a star, but the 21-year-old could have a shot at securing his spot in new head coach Adrian Griffin’s rotation.
Bucks Add Depth at Point Guard
Washington, who spent his rookie year with the Houston Rockets last term, now gets a fresh start in Milwaukee. There’s no guarantee that he’s going to make the final roster cut heading in 2023-24, but the fact that he’s the only natural point guard on the squad outside of Jrue Holiday might just give him a significant advantage.
Last season with the Rockets, the 6-foot-3 PG averaged 4.7 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 14.0 minutes off the bench.
The former No. 29 overall pick saw himself shipped off by Houston this summer as part of the complex five-team trade that centered around Dillon Brooks taking his talents to the Rockets. Washington landed with the Atlanta Hawks, but he ended up being traded again just days after joining the team. The Hawks traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Patty Mills. Earlier this month, TyTy became a free agent after OKC waived his services.
Washington now gets a fresh start in Milwaukee where he could end up ressurecting his career. This young man still has a lot of untapped potential and the change in scenery could work wonders for him.
