MLB Power Rankings: Big Changes to The Top 5 as The Rays Collapse

After the last week of baseball, there have been some big changes to the top 5 in this weeks power rankings. It starts off with the Rays who are going through their biggest slump of the season, sporting a  7 game losing streak. Wander Franco, the number 1 prospect in baseball the last 2 years is getting called up by the Rays on Tuesday just in time for their 3 game series against the Boston Red Sox who just took over first place in the AL East.

Another big mover in this weeks power rankings will be the Houston Astros. The Astro’s are currently on a 7 game win streak and don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. In the last week, the Astros swept both the Rangers (2 games) and the White Sox (4 games).  During the next week, they will be playing series against the Orioles and the Tigers, so I’m expecting them to win both of those series pretty handily.

The Brewers dropped out of the top 5 after a pretty rough week of baseball. They got swept by the Reds in 3 games at home, then they went to Colorado and split the 4 game series with the Rockies over the weekend. They fell to 5-5 in their last 10 games as well.

    Top 5

    1. San Francisco Giants (Prev. 3)

Moving up to the top spot this week is the Giants. In the last 7 games, the Giants offense is scorching hot. They are batting .324, with 15 home runs, 52 RBI, and a OPS of 1.049. Also, they have 18 extra base hits in that stretch. Granted, they played against the Diamondbacks and the Phillies. They still did what they were supposed to do and they swept the Diamondbacks in 4 games, then they took 2 out 3 against the Phillies. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and they have the best overall record in baseball.

    2. Houston Astros (Prev. 10)

Your biggest movers this week are the Houston Astros. They made the leap from number 10 to number 2 based off a couple reasons. They are currently on a 7 game win streak and they are doing it both with the bats and from their pitching. In the last 7 days, the Astros offense is hitting .303, with 13 home runs, 41 RBI, 42 runs scored, and a .930 OPS. Their pitching has been just as good during that stretch. They are 6-0, with an ERA of 1.89, 55 strikeouts, and a 0.95 WHIP. This hasn’t been the only stretch where their offense and pitching have been brilliant. In the last 30 days, their offense is number 1 in baseball, and their pitching has also been among the best in baseball the last 30 days at number 4.

    3. Los Angeles Dodgers (Prev. 4)

Albert Pujols hammers three-run homer to left field, June 20, 2021
This week, the Dodgers move up one spot to number 3. The Dodgers just finished what was most likely their easiest stretch of baseball games. They have won 10 of their last 12 games against the Pirates, Rangers, Phillies, and the Diamondbacks. But give them credit. Although they have been facing some pretty easy teams, they are still doing what they need to do and winning those games. Once again, they have been getting it done with their pitching. In the last 7 days, they have an ERA of 3.00, given up 16 runs, 2 home runs, they have 51 strikeouts, and have a WHIP of 1.11. They are about to start a stretch of games where all of their opponents are above .500. Over the next week and a half, they will be going up against the Padres, Giants, and the Cubs.

    4. Chicago White Sox (Prev. 2)

Jake Lamb ropes a two-run home run to right field, June 20, 2021
The White Sox week could have gone a lot better to say the least. They started off last week by taking 2 out of 3 against the Rays, then it went downhill when they got swept in four games against the Astros. The White Sox offense has been struggling mightily in the last 7 days as they only hit 4 home runs and are batting .218. Their pitching has been struggling just as bad the last 7 days with an ERA of 4.91. We will see if they can put last week behind them and turn it around against the Pirates, Mariners, and Twins.

    5. Boston Red Sox (Prev. 7)

Rafael Devers crushes 447-ft. home run, June 20, 2021
The Boston Red Sox snuck their way into this weeks top 5. The Red Sox are 6-4 over their last 10 games and they took over first place in the AL East after the collapse of the Tampa Bay Rays. Over the last 7 games, their offense has been terrific. They are batting .310, with 10 home runs, 33 RBI, 15 extra base hits, and an OPS of .925. Over the last week and a half, they split their series against the Blue Jays 2 games to 2, swept the Braves in their 2 game series, then lost the weekend series against the Royals 2 games to 1. They will be getting a tough matchup this week as they will be taking on the Rays and the Yankees.

The Rest of The Top 20

    7. Tampa Bay Rays (1)
