MLB News: The Seattle Mariners have been a great second half of the season story. On June 30, the Mariners were 38-42 and 10 games out of first. Come August 26 they are 72-56 and hold a share of first place with the slumping Texas Rangers. As a team they were last in this position 20 years ago.

According to Daniel Kramer the last time the Mariners were in first place this late in the season was August 26, 2003. Exactly 20 years ago that Seattle team won 93 games, but finished in second place to the 96 win Oakland Athletics. To make matters worse they didn’t make the post season either.
In 2022 the Mariners snapped a 21 year playoff drought by securing a Wild Card spot. They went on defeat the Toronto Blue Jays in the Wild Card Series, but then were swept by the eventual World Series Champion Houston Astros in the American League Divisional Series.
This year Seattle has their sights set on winning the division for the first time since 2001. After their victory last night Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford said, “Like Jay Buhner once said, ‘Forget the Wild Card, man, we’re going for that division.'”
