MLB News: The New York Yankees have had a crazy past few couple of days. In unexpected fashion they remained very quiet at the trade deadline and did not acquire any batters. Following this Domingo German had a clubhouse incident in which alcohol was involved and he eventually was placed on the restricted list. Then when things couldn’t get much bleaker they suddenly lost first baseman Anthony Rizzo due to cognitive impairments that were traced back to an incident sustained in May.
Thankfully for Yankees fans today they received good news as a key piece of their starting rotation returned. This pitcher had been out since late May due to a rotator cuff strain sustained in his left shoulder.
New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes returns to the starting rotation (MLB News).
Ahead of Saturdays game against the Houston Astros the Yankees activated Nestor Cortes. Prior to his injury he had a 5.16 ERA over 11 starts, but he was an All-Star in 2022 and finished eighth in Cy Young votes. Left-hander Nick Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move.
Nestor Cortes will join a starting rotation that also has Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Severino in it. At the time of Cortes being activated the Yankees had a 57-53 record, were last in the AL East, and were 3.5 games back from a Wild Card spot.
