MLB News: The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox have swung a trade that is going to reunite LA with a former member of their 2020 World Series winning team.
Ken Rosenthal and Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported the news that Enrique “Kike” Hernandez was being sent to the Dodgers. In return Boston will receive pitchers Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman. Both are in the upper minor leagues in which Robertson has minimal big league time and Hagenman is yet to make his MLB debut.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are bringing back Kiki Hernandez in a trade with the Boston Red Sox (MLB News).
Kiki Hernandez left LA after the 2020 World Series win and signed with the Red Sox. He is in the final year of his contract and will become a free agent at seasons end. The versatile utility player is unfortunately having a very difficult season.
Entering 2023 Hernandez was expected to play center field but when Trevor Story’s injury news broke the Red Sox shifted him to shortstop. He did not perform well defensively at that position and at the plate he is under performing as well. This year he has just a .222/.279/.320 slash line and 61 OPS+.
It is quite possible that coming back to some familiar scenery will help spark Hernandez this season. He was with the Dodgers from 2015-2020 and overall did well in a limited role. It’s expected that through the remainder of this season he will get opportunities to bat against southpaws.
