Danilo Gallinari is a name that hasn’t broken through the national sporting headlines for a while. The forward, who played a chunk of the 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks, used to be one of the better forwards for a good chunk of the 2010s.
However, his performances last season had his value as a good rotation option shrink rapidly. It’s not weird to think that Gallo would better find his fortunes elsewhere the way Patrick Beverley, his former teammate, did after playing a mediocre season with the squad.
However, it seems the Italian isn’t ready to call it a day on his NBA journey. The man is reportedly doing everything he can to stay in the league for at least one more year.
RUMOR: Former Milwaukee Bucks man Danilo Gallinari wants to play one more season in the NBA
NBC Sports Kurt Helin wrote about Gallinari’s pro basketball prospects after the 2023-24 campaign. He noted that the 6’10” forward isn’t ready to return to Europe just yet:
“A return to Italy? Not yet,” Gallinari said.
“There is still time for [me in] the market, anything can happen at any time. Miami? It’s not my time yet, there are other free agents and we’ll decide later. It could be anywhere, as long as it’s a competitive franchise,” said Gallinari.
Danilo Gallinari has proven himself to be a great player who can provide spacing when put in the right situation. He’s shown over the years that he’s a capable shooter over 14 seasons in the NBA.
However, his most recent ACL injury may have affected him more than anticipated. He averaged a disappointing 2.8 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 9.1 minutes over 17 games after the Milwaukee Bucks acquired Gallinari off waivers.
It will become tough for the Bucks or any other team to offer him a roster spot when there are athletes with better health who can perform his job well. However, Danilo has the experience and mentality to thrive in an NBA locker room, and there will be coaches who find value in that.
Whether the benefit outweighs the negatives of signing a player like Gallinari is an entirely different conversation.
