A couple of seasons ago, Lonnie Walker IV impressed basketball fans during his stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. His performance there should warrant a consideration from the Milwaukee Bucks to sign him up for training camp.
Walker was born in Reading, Pennsylvania and attended Reading Senior High School, where he was named a McDonald’s All-American and Mr. Pennsylvania Basketball.
After his successful high school career, Walker played one season of college basketball for the Miami Hurricanes, earning a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team. He then declared for the 2018 NBA Draft and was selected 18th overall by the San Antonio Spurs.
Walker spent four seasons with the Spurs, establishing himself as a solid contributor off the bench. In 2022, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played for one season. Most recently, Walker joined the Brooklyn Nets for the 2023-2024 NBA season.
Throughout his professional career, Walker has showcased his versatility as a wing player, with the ability to score, rebound, and defend at a high level. He has continued to develop his game, making significant strides in various aspects of his play during his time in the NBA.
Why The Milwaukee Bucks Should Sign Former Los Angeles Lakers Star Lonnie Walker IV for Training Camp
At this moment in time, teams around their league are preparing for training camp. Among the guys Milwaukee should sign for their own camp is Walker, as explained in an article by Dalton Sell for Behind The Buck Pass.
“It’s shocking that Lonnie Walker IV remains unsigned this deep into free agency. Had the Bucks not filled their final standard roster spot with Gary Trent Jr., it feels like they maybe would have snatched him up to bulk up their shooting guard depth instead. While they don’t have room for him on their primary roster, they should certainly try to get him into the organization one way or another.
Walker’s most desirable attribute is his athleticism. He’s the definition of a leaper, as he can jump out of the gym at any moment for a highlight dunk. He could give Milwaukee a needed spark in transition, an area they struggled in last season. Furthermore, he’s shot 35.8 percent from deep for his career, so he’s much more than just a dunker. The guard could be a second-unit sparkplug offensively,” Sell wrote.
During his stint with LeBron James and the Lakers, Walker averaged 11.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He also averaged 42 percent from the field, 35 percent from deep, and almost 80 percent from the free throw line.
It remains to be seen whether Milwaukee will make an offer for Walker to join training camp or not. If he does make the roster, expect the former Lakers star to thrive with the duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard next season.
