Like head coach Doc Rivers, Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst will face an uphill battle to prove his worth when the new season begins. As it stands, there’s a lot hanging on the line for him on whether the Giannis Antetokounmpo-led team can succeed or fail in the upcoming campaign.
Over a month ago, Horst addressed the team’s quiet offseason following a disappointing playoff exit. The Bucks, after acquiring Damian Lillard, faced challenges with injuries impacting two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite these setbacks, Horst emphasized the importance of building a competitive roster. This offseason, the Bucks made strategic signings, including Gary Trent Jr., Delon Wright, and Taurean Prince, to enhance their depth.
Horst expressed confidence in the pairing of Lillard and Antetokounmpo, believing their synergy will improve in their second year together. He reiterated his commitment to keeping Brook Lopez, highlighting his vital role in the team’s defensive strategy. Additionally, Horst reflected on the need for a cohesive coaching staff under Doc Rivers, which he believes will foster player development and tactical flexibility.
Looking ahead, Horst is optimistic about the Bucks’ positioning in the Eastern Conference, asserting they still belong among the league’s elite teams. He acknowledged the competitive landscape, especially with other teams making significant moves, but maintains that Milwaukee’s core talent and experience give them a solid foundation for success.
ESPN Says Milwaukee Bucks General Manager Jon Horst Has a Lot To Prove Next Season
After a series of disappointing playoff performances, there’s mounting pressure for the Bucks to show they can go far with their roster. That expectation forms the basis of ESPN’s analysis on Horst for the upcoming season.
“Horst has not been afraid to shake up his team in the past few years.
He fired coach Mike Budenholzer, who won a championship with Milwaukee in 2021 and guided the Bucks to the best record in the NBA during the 2022-23 regular season, after losing in the first round in 2023. He traded for Lillard the following offseason, parting with Jrue Holiday, who ended up winning a title with the rival Boston Celtics. Then he fired Adrian Griffin, the first-year coach he hired to replace Budenholzer, 43 games into his NBA career to hire Rivers.
Horst has stated the Bucks’ championship expectations remain high. But it remains to be seen if these bold shake-ups will pay off.”
Jon Horst has held the Bucks GM position since June 2017. Previously, he served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Bucks and worked with the Detroit Pistons. Horst was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2019 and led the Bucks to a championship in 2021.
It remains to be seen how the Bucks will perform next season or if they can exceed the expectations set of them. In any case, Horst’s job will be on the line if the team fails to make it past the first round next year.
