It’s no secret the Golden State Warriors aren’t as dominant as they were years ago. According to Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce, though, they can make it back to the top if they trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Golden State Warriors’ offseason has been a mix of both cheer and gloom for their fans. The departure of Klay Thompson, a Warriors icon, was a painful and disappointing reality for the organization and its supporters. Thompson, who spent his entire 14-year career with the team, won four championships and earned numerous accolades, including All-NBA and All-Star selections.
However, the offseason was not entirely bleak, as All-Star guard Stephen Curry‘s Olympic gold medal success provided a glimmer of hope. Curry’s spectacular performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he led Team USA to victory, showcased his continued ability to play at the highest level.
While the Warriors did make some roster moves, acquiring players like De’Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield, and Kyle Anderson, these additions are unlikely to propel the team back to championship contention. The organization’s focus seems to have shifted towards luxury tax relief, which led to the loss of Thompson.
The question now is whether the Warriors can continue to build a competitive team around Curry. The superstar guard’s still-stellar play demands that the franchise takes advantage of his abilities while they still can. If the Warriors want to keep Curry as a Warrior for the remainder of his career, they will need to make significant efforts to surround him with the necessary pieces to compete for championships once again.
The Reason Why Paul Pierce Thinks The Golden State Warriors Must Acquire Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo
If ever the Dubs are serious in keeping Curry’s championship window open, they may have to make some big moves down the line. According to an article by Joey Linn for Sports Illustrated, one of those potential moves came from Pierce and it involved trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Recognizing this dynamic, NBA legend Paul Pierce floated a Giannis Antetokounmpo to Golden State trade.
“The only way I see Golden State getting back to where they need to get back to is if they can find a way to get Giannis over there,” Pierce said to his former Boston Celtics teammate Kevin Garnett on an episode of KG Certified.
Garnett suggested Pierce must have some inside information if he is floating such a trade between Golden State and the Milwaukee Bucks, but Pierce insisted this is just his opinion on how the Warriors can reestablish themselves as contenders.
Antetokounmpo posted MVP-worthy numbers when he averaged 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game during the previous regular season. The thing is, getting the All-Star forward won’t exactly be cheap for Golden State due to the immense value Antetokounmpo has in the market.
It remains to be seen how the Dubs will make this proposal a reality or if they pursue it all. In any case, the Greek Freak will surely be a magnet for any team aiming to win a ring down the line.
