The hiring of Doc Rivers midway last season led to several assistant coaches being let go a couple of months ago, including DJ Bakker. Fortunately, the former Milwaukee Bucks coaching staff official has found a new home in another part of the league.
The Bucks have made significant changes to their coaching staff, dismissing three assistant coaches: Josh Oppenheimer, Sidney Dobner, and DJ Bakker. This decision comes during a critical transition period for the team following the hiring of Rivers.
Oppenheimer had a long association with the Bucks, initially joining the franchise in 2013 and returning in 2020 under former coach Mike Budenholzer. He played a key role in player development, notably working with Giannis Antetokounmpo during his rookie season.
Sidney Dobner made history as the first female full-time assistant coach in Bucks history after being promoted from her role as head video coordinator. She joined the Bucks in 2020 and previously worked with the Wisconsin Herd, the team’s G League affiliate.
DJ Bakker spent just one season with the Bucks, having been hired by Rivers after coaching in the G League with the Motor City Cruise. His time with the Bucks was brief as the team looks to reconfigure its coaching lineup.
As Rivers settles into his role, he has brought in new assistants, including Dave Joerger and Rex Kalamian, to establish a cohesive coaching strategy. The Bucks aim to enhance their performance after a challenging season, focusing on building a strong support system around their core players.
Former Milwaukee Bucks Assistant Coach DJ Bakker Set To Coach Charlotte Hornets’ G League Team
After being cut by the Bucks a couple of months ago, Bakker has found himself with a new role. As seen in a tweet by Eric Nehm on his official X account, the former Bucks assistant is now the Greensboro Swarm head coach.

With a background in player development and coaching, Bakker aims to enhance the team’s performance and cultivate talent within the organization. His experience included significant roles in various leagues, making him well-suited to lead the Swarm as they pursue success in the upcoming season.
Using his experience as an assistant in Milwaukee, Bakker hopes to elevate the Swarm and compete in the G League when their season starts. For sure, the experience will be worth it for the former Bucks staff member.
