Having a reliable wing who can defend and drain buckets is a must in today’s NBA. In that regard, the Milwaukee Bucks’ front office may consider acquiring Derrick Jones Jr. from the Dallas Mavericks when free agency starts soon.
Although his latter collegiate stint for the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels was marred by controversy, Jones still considered returning to play for another season in 2016. Ultimately, he decided to declare for the NBA Draft that year but was left without any team selecting him.

Fortunately, the Phoenix Suns were impressed with his Summer League performance and signed him up for the 2016-17 campaign. It wasn’t until his stint with the Miami Heat at the start of 2018 when Jones first made waves in the NBA. During that stretch until the 2019-20 season, the lanky forward 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds while defending multiple positions on the other end of the court.
Fast forward to now and NBA fans will soon see him play with Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. His ability to attack the rim and lock down his assignment for the night has greatly helped his team survive a gauntlet of competitors in the Western Conference, such as the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dallas Mavericks’ Derrick Jones Jr. Named As Potential Free Agent Target for Milwaukee Bucks

Jones has been quite a boon for Dallas these past few weeks. The thing is, Milwaukee has a hope of becoming better if they have someone like him in the lineup, as explained by Dalton Sell in an article for Behind the Buck Pass.
“The 6-foot-5 forward has been a tremendous pickup for Dallas, providing quality play on both sides of the floor with his athleticism, length and basketball IQ. He’s been masterful in the playoffs, helping Dallas reach the NBA Finals by putting up 9.9 points and 1.1 blocks per matchup while knocking down 39.6 of his shots from percent from long range. The Bucks need a player who can do exactly this.
Jones would be an excellent addition to this Milwaukee roster, giving them a forward with legitimate height and length who can hold their own defensively. On the other end, it would be nice to have an athlete who can catch lobs, sky for rebounds and simply get back in transition, something this roster has not had outside of Giannis Antetokounmpo in a while,” Sell wrote.
Adding Jones to the duo Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard will surely elevate their performance on the court. With the Dallas Mavericks star in the lineup, the former will have more space to operate on the paint while the latter will receive some help in covering his defensive deficiencies.

Jones is slated to become a free agent by the end of this season and is expected to received a heftier contract soon. If the Bucks can make room for him, the forward will definitely be a welcome addition to the existing core.
