Throughout the years, Bobby Portis has established himself as a beloved member of the Milwaukee Bucks, especially amongst fans. This offseason, though, is a big one for the veteran forward as he is eligible to get an extension.
Before entering the league, Portis had a successful college career at the University of Arkansas, earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 2015 and being named a consensus second-team All-American. He was then selected in the first round of the 2015 Draft by the Chicago Bulls with the 22nd overall pick.
During his time with the Bulls, Portis had several strong performances, including a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds in a game against the Boston Celtics in 2017. However, he also faced some off-court issues, including a suspension for an altercation with a teammate.
After playing for Chicago, he had stints with the Washington Wizards and New York Knicks before joining the two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in 2020. In Milwaukee, Portis has continued to be a productive player, helping the team win an NBA championship in 2021. He has established himself as a valuable frontcourt player in the NBA, known for his rebounding and scoring ability.
Bobby Portis Eligible to Receive a Hefty Extension From the Milwaukee Bucks This Offseason
As it stands, Portis still has two years left in his contract with the freedom to opt out of the final season. According to an article written by Jim Owczarski for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Bucks’ veteran forward is eligible to receive an extension from his current team.
“Portis can receive a maximum contract from the Bucks of $78.9 million over the next four years. The Journal Sentinel has learned that, while Portis is interested in an extension, there has been no movement on that front from the organization,” Owczarski wrote.
Last season, the fourth year Portis has played for Milwaukee, the forward averaged 13.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. He also connected 50 percent of his field goals, 40 percent from downtown, and 79 percent from the free throw line. It’s not yet known whether the Bucks’ front office can afford to give him an extension, given how top-heavy the roster already is.
If Portis doesn’t get an extension from the Bucks, expect him to included in trade talks in the coming months. For sure, any team in the league would love to have a player with his skill set.
