Speaking to reporters after the Milwaukee Bucks’ deflating loss against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, Damian Lillard stated that he’s the type of player who “takes charge.” At the same time, however, the seven-time All-Star said that this is not something he’s going to do with his new team because he wants “to accept the process” involved in the team’s growing pains.
Being the new kid on the block, Dame clearly does not want to overstep.
Milwaukee Bucks Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Reacts to Raptors Loss
Lillard also said that he believes one of the reasons behind Milwaukee’s early-season struggles stems from “everybody trying to do the right thing and nobody wants to do the wrong thing.”
Bucks talisman Giannis Antetokounmpo agrees with this notion — somewhat, at least. While the former back-to-back MVP sees where Dame is coming from with this, he also believes that it’s necessary at times for the team to have someone lead the charge:
“I feel like a lot of people are trying to do the right thing and sometimes it’s gotta be somebody that gonna have to start the spark and do something that other people can follow,” he said, via Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “At times, some guys did that tonight but wasn’t able to follow up with it.”
I’m not entirely sure if Antetokounmpo was referring to himself here or if he was hinting at Lillard taking on a bigger leadership role. For all we know, Giannis could also be calling out his other teammates to step it up.
“When offensively we got some easy look and some easy buckets, defensively we wasn’t able to stop them,” he continued. “So again, at times, I think sometimes guys gotta step up and impose their will so other people can follow and kind of build energy and start something going.”
Whoever it’s going to be, someone has to do it now. And they better do it on a more consistent basis.
