The Toronto Raptors did a tremendous job locking down Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo during Wednesday’s showdown. In the first half, the former back-to-back MVP managed just three points on four shot attempts, which speaks volumes of how ineffective he was during the first two quarters of play.
Milwaukee Bucks Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Reacts to OG Anunoby’s Defense
A lot of credit needs to be given to Raptors wing OG Anunoby. He was the man assigned to defend Antetokounmpo for the majority of the contest, which is obviously one of the toughest tasks a defender can get. Anunoby knew what he needed to do and he did his job extremely well.
Giannis was still able to finish with 16 points (on 5-of-11 shooting), and it’s also true that Anunoby got a lot of help from his teammates in terms of covering the Bucks talisman. There’s no denying, however, that it’s OG who deserves a huge pat on the back for his stellar effort on Antetokounmpo.
After the game, Giannis himself was asked what he thought Anunoby did right to be that effective against him. The seven-time All-Star got brutally honest in his response:
“I don’t know,” Giannis responded.
The reporter pressed Anteotkounmpo by asking if he felt Anunoby took something away from him during the game, particularly during the opening half. Antetokounmpo refused to oblige:
“I don’t know,” he said again.
It’s not as if Giannis is being disrespectful here. He’s probably just being totally honest about not knowing why Anunoby was so effective against him on the defensive end.
Even if Anteotkounmpo actually knew, however, you wouldn’t expect him to spill the beans on himself and potentially help defenders who will be matched up against him in the future.
