Milwaukee Bucks news: More than a few folks out there were taken by surprise by how Giannis Antetokounmpo suddenly agreed to sign a contract extension with the Bucks. This is after the former back-to-back MVP himself previously stated that he wanted to wait until next season to sign a more lucrative deal.
As it turns out, one person, in particular, led to Antetokounmpo’s decision to take a complete U-turn on his stance.
Giannis Anteotkounmpo’s Brother Convinced Him to Sign Milwaukee Bucks Extension
According to Giannis himself, it was his own brother, Thanasis, aka GM TA, who spoke some sense into him in terms of the benefits of signing an extension this summer as opposed to waiting for next year:
“For me, signing is basically, as I said earlier, it wouldn’t make sense for me to sign it, but then I had a conversation with my family, aka GM TA, that it would make more sense for me to sign because I’d be able to — first of all, you don’t know what tomorrow holds — but I’d have the eligibility to re-sign in 2026 or I don’t remember what he told me, but that was the smartest thing to do,” Giannis said, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “So I just kind of trust his thinking.”
There are quite a few things to take away from this. First of all, it’s how much Giannis trusts his family. Based on his statement above, the seven-time All-Star isn’t even privy to the details of his potential contract extension in 2026.
For what it’s worth, Giannis signing a deal now means that he will be eligible to sign a short-term extension in 2026. After that, he will be able to sign a four-year extension in 2028 once he’s 32, which could very well be the final big-money contract of his career.
All this also speaks volumes of just how much Giannis prioritizes his basketball over all the money involved in the same. It’s not as if he doesn’t care about earning as much as he can during his career, but it is also clear that this only comes second to his incessant desire to win.
Now that that’s out of the way, Antetokounmpo can now focus on his basketball.
