The Milwaukee Bucks at this point will try to upgrade the roster before the NBA trade deadline. However, it will be intriguing to see what kind of moves general manager Jon Horst will make entering the final year of his contract. One of the biggest decisions that Horst will have to make is whether or not to trade Bobby Portis Jr. before the end of the season.
He is one of a few players on the Milwaukee Bucks roster who could potentially be traded before the end of the season. Portis Jr. has been rumored in many trade talks dating back to last offseason.
Rohan Raman Of Sportsillustrated.com Has the Milwaukee Bucks Trading Bobby Portis Jr. To the Atlanta Hawks In a Shocking Three-Team Deal
Rohan Roman of sportsillustrated.com created a shocking three-team mock trade between the Milwaukee Bucks, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Atlanta Hawks. This season, Milwaukee is 16-12 and is currently the fifth seed in the east, Atlanta is 15-15 and they are currently the seventh seed in the east, and Brooklyn is 11-18 and the 12th seed in the east.
In this crazy mock trade, the Atlanta Hawks would be acquiring Bobby Portis, Shake Milton, and Delon Wright. The Brooklyn Nets would be acquiring Larry Nance, Pat Connaughton, David Roddy, AJ Johnson, and 2031 first-round and second-round selections from the Milwaukee Bucks. Milwaukee would be acquiring Cam Johnson, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick.
Roman said as to why they would trade for the Milwaukee Bucks reliable bench player:
“Portis shoots well from deep (39.6% on 3.6 attempts a game), brings energy as a rebounder, is under contract for next year and can play center in certain matchups (filling the role of backup center vacated by moving Nance). He’s a versatile rotation piece that can give teams a spark off the bench. Wright is a solid backup point guard who Atlanta has struggled to replace since his departure. He is also coming off a fantastic game against the Bulls where he racked up 9 points, five rebounds and four assists. Milton is simply veteran guard depth for the Hawks to call upon.”
The Atlanta Hawks are trying to make it to the playoffs this season after missing the playoffs a season ago. Bobby Portis Jr. would be a big deal for Atlanta.
Cam Johnson Would Help the Bucks
One of the things that have been missing for the Milwaukee Bucks this season has been finding a reliable third option outside of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. Cam Johnson could be the perfect third option that Milwaukee is looking for. Johnson this season is averaging 19.1 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 3.1 APG, along with shooting 48.8% from the field.
Rohan Roman also added about why the Bucks should make this three-team deal:
“Johnson is a better player than Portis in almost every fashion. He’s a much better shooter (42% from deep on 7.6 attempts a game), passes well for his size and can hold up on defense. In addition, he has some experience as a primary offensive option and should be able to function as an efficient third or fourth scorer for the Bucks that still competes on the glass and guards wings. The Bucks do not need as much offense from him, so he can focus solely on being hyper-effective in the areas Milwaukee needs him most.”
Cam Johnson is 28 years old, but he is a much better offensive player than Bobby Portis Jr. is. The Bucks need more valuable players offensively on the wings and Johnson is a very good wing player who will be a very hot trade chip at the NBA trade deadline.
