The Milwaukee Brewers won a thrilling game on Tuesday night in what was the first of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals. This game result was a 3-2 Brewers victory that was highlighted by a pitchers duel early on and Milwaukee fending off a late Cardinals rally in what was a thrilling finish to a ball game.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Frankie Montas and St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Erick Fedde were in a pitchers duel early on.
Frankie Montas and Erick Fedde are both newcomers to their respective organizations as they were involved in deals around the time of the trade deadline. In this game they dueled against one another as Montas tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit whereas Fedde threw 5.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs.
The Brewers scored early in this game and the Cardinals late.
Milwaukee felt in control for most of this game. They scored a run in the second inning, a run in the fifth inning, and their final run in the eighth. William Contreras had three hits (all on the first pitch) for the Brewers and his last hit was a double in the eighth that provided a much needed insurance run.
St. Louis rallied late in this game as they scored two runs in the eighth inning and loaded the bases in the ninth. Matt Carpenter provided a pinch hit two run home run in the eighth inning. Brewers manager Pat Murphy had left-handed pitcher Jared Koenig warming in the bullpen when the left-handed swinging Carpenter was announced as a pinch hitter, but he stuck with right-handed throwing Nick Mears.
In the ninth inning Milwaukee had Devin Williams on the mound. After getting the first batter out he surrendered back-to-back singles and then Lars Nootbaar was intentionally walked to load the bases. From there Williams struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman to end the game.
Six games is a season best winning streak for the Milwaukee Brewers.
This win marked the Brewers sixth consecutive victory and marked their longest winning streak of the season. The last time they won six or more games in a row was August of 2023 when they had a nine game winning streak. Excluding their current winning streak they had achieved five wins in a row on three other occasions this year.
Milwaukee and St. Louis will play again on Wednesday, August 21. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM and will be aired on FS1.
