Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames made history on Tuesday night when he stole his 20th base of the season. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel pointed out that he is the first shortstop in franchise history to steal 20 bases and hit 30 home runs. Adam McCalvy of MLB.com also pointed out that he is on a short list of shortstops to do this and while also collecting 100 RBI’s.
Willy Adames stole his 20th base of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In the second inning Willy Adames swiped his 20th base of the season off Pirates pitcher Bailey Falter. With this steal he became the fifth Brewers player to reach 20+ stolen bases this year. Per Curt Hogg a few days ago Adames said that a friend texted him asking him, “You have 18 stolen bases. What are you doing?” He’s since gone on to record steals in back-to-back games and reach 20.
No other shortstop in Milwaukee Brewers franchise history has had a 30 home run and 20 stolen base season.
As mentioned Willy Adames is now the first shortstop in the history of the Brewers franchise to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. Interestingly outside of Milwaukee shortstops Gunnar Henderson (37 home runs, 21 stolen bases), Bobby Witt (32 home runs, 31 stolen bases), and Francisco Lindor (31 home runs, 27 stolen bases) have all accomplished this as well.
If you factor into Willy Adames’ 100 RBI’s he joins a very short list of shortstop to have such a season.
Per Adam McCalvy just four shortstops since 1901 have had a season consisting of 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases, and 100 RBI. Bobby Witt has accomplished it this year, Trevor Story in 2018, and then Alex Rodriguez in 1998 and 1999.
