Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams was far from his top form Wednesday night. For the first time in the 2024 MLB season, Williams blew a save, as he failed to protect the Brewers’ two-run lead when he stepped on the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Just a day after he was described as “cold-blooded” by teammate Frankie Montas, Williams surrendered two earned runs and issued three free passes in 0.2 innings opposite the Cardinals.
“I would say it’s a worse feeling than actually giving up a hit, because I beat myself today,” Williams shared after the game, per Joe Harris of the Associated Press. “You know, I didn’t make them beat me. I didn’t even make them swing the bat.”
Williams started his short stint on the mound by hitting Willson Contreras with a pitch. He then gave up a double to Jose Fermin that moved Contreras to third base. After striking out Nolan Arenado, Williams walked Lars Nootbar, who was then replaced by Victor Scott II. With the bases loaded, Williams fanned Paul Goldschmidt but proceeded to walk Matt Carpenter which led to a run from Contreras. Williams walked the next batter, Tommy Pham, to let Fermin score a run and tie the game up.
That was the last straw for Bucks manager Pat Murphy, as he took out Williams for Trevor Megill, who didn’t do much better. An inning later, Megill allowed a grand slam home run to Arenado to give the Cardinals the victory.
Williams isn’t always going to be lights out for the Brewers. It was just one of those nights for the two-time National League Reliever of the Year.
