Jon Morosi made a big claim about Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras just before Wednesday night’s game between the Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers at American Family Field. For Morosi, Contreras is already the best hitter among all catchers in the big leagues today.
“It’s the reliability. Now, he’s above 90 starts behind the plate,” Morosi said of Contreras during an interview on the MLB Network.
“That is a tremendous mark of achievement and durability for Contreras as we know of course a National League All-star Catcher and when you look at his overall career trajectory, when you consider someone who’s still in his age 26 season, his career OPS as a catcher is already above 800. It’s been about five years in the Major League since we’ve seen a young catcher come on and produce at this level and there you see what he’s done so far this season quite simply the best hitting catcher in Major League Baseball right now but of course the man across the”
Regardless of how one feels about Morosi’s claim, it’s hard to deny that Contreras, at the very least, is one of the best catches in Major League Baseball this season. After all, he just got his second All-Star nod in 2024 — the second overall in his career.
Contreras entered Wednesday’s date against the Dodgers with the best wRC+ (128) among all qualified catchers in the majors to go with a 3.5 fWAR and a .354 wOBA.
Although he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against the Dodgers, Contreras is still batting a solid .283/.355/.458 this season with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs.
