It was an exciting start to the week in St. Louis as the Milwaukee Brewers battled the Cardinals. Here is a complete recap of the series and what to expect next from the Brew Crew.
Brewers vs. Cardinals Game One:
Final Score: 18-1 Cardinals
Freddy Peralta went up against Jack Flaherty in game one. Peralta fought his way into the sixth inning but allowed six runs. Milwaukee’s bullpen allowed an additional 12 runs, nine of which came off of Gus Varland.
Flaherty tossed seven shutout innings for the Cardinals. The Brewers’ lone run was an RBI single off the bat of Jessie Winker.
Brewers vs. Cardinals Game Two:
Final Score: 3-2 Brewers
It was a Southpaw battle in game two; Wade Miley was up against fellow left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery. Miley pitched just one and two-thirds of an inning and allowed a run to cross before exiting the game with an apparent lat injury.
The Brewers’ bullpen did a stellar job filling in for the injured left-hander and allowed just one run in a combined seven and a third innings.
Montgomery did not have a great start either; the lefty scattered three runs in five and a third innings. Willy Adames drove in Owen Miller with an RBI double in the first inning. The Crew then stayed quiet until the fifth and sixth innings when they got a pair of solo home runs courtesy of Joey Wiemer and Brian Anderson. This gave the Milwaukee a 3-2 lead, and after a couple of shutout innings from the bullpen, Milwaukee picked up the win.
Brewers vs. Cardinals Game Three:
Final Score: 3-0 Cardinals
Corbin Burnes went up against Matthew Liberatore for the finale of this three-game series. Burnes scattered three runs over six innings, a rather pedestrian start considering what is expected of Burnes.
Liberatore and company held the Brewers’ bats in check all game. Unfortunately, due to the lack of run support, Corbin Burnes picked up the loss, and the Milwaukee dropped the three-game series.
Overall this was not the best series for Milwaukee. The bats only mustered four runs the whole series, the pitching was respectable outside of game one, but the loss of Miley could prove fatal if the Brewers can’t find a good replacement.
