The Milwaukee Brewers have just begun Cactus League games, but already a dark horse candidate to make the Opening Day roster has emerged. That player is 28 year old infielder Vinny Capra.
Vinny Capra joined the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023
In November of 2023, the Brewers claimed Vinny Capra off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ended up playing in just three big league games a season ago, but in the minor leagues he slashed .261/.348/.382 with 26 doubles and 10 stolen bases. Defensively, he logged 410 innings at shortstop last year, 302 innings at second base, and 215 innings at third base.
Vinny Capra is off to a tremendous spring training start
Capra is by no means a power threat at the plate, but through his first 10 at-bats this spring he has smashed three home runs. His most recent home run, against the Dodgers, came off of Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Before that, he had a multi-home run game against the Cincinnati Reds, where he hit long balls off of Yosver Zulueta and Alan Busenitz.

Could Vinny Capra make the Opening Day roster?
There are still a lot of spring training games left to be played, but the Brewers do have an opening at third base. While Caleb Durbin, Oliver Dunn, Andruw Monasterio, and Tyler Black are are candidates to man the hot corner, it would not be out of the question for Milwaukee to give Capra a shot if he continues to excel at the plate.
