The Milwaukee Brewers are 19-19, tied for second place in the NL Central and three games behind the hated Chicago Cubs. To say that their season has been underwhelming would be an understatement. Based on their 95 wins a year ago, and the return of several young stars, their performance so far in 2024 has been an overall disappointment.
To be sure, there have been bright spots. Brice Turang and Sal Frelick have been Milwaukee’s best hitters so far this season, and Rhys Hoskins is hitting and getting on base more.
But other contributors who are relied upon to produce, Christian Yelich, William Contreras, and Joey Ortiz, have been inconsistent. And while Contreras has a fractured finger that can explain his dip in production, Yelich and Ortiz have no such excuse.
What is more, the Brewers have been severely let down by Vinny Capra, who made the team initially because of a monster Spring Training.
The Milwaukee Brewers Have Designated Vinny Capra for Assignment

Capra had an OPS over 1.000 and slugged six home runs in Spring Training, a performance that made him impossible to leave off of the Brewers Opening Day roster. Additionally, he has no more minor league options remaining, meaning that if Milwaukee wanted to part ways with him, they would have to designate him for assignment.
And after he started the 2024 season 4-54, that is exactly what they did:

As one can see from Milwaukee’s post above, Capra was designated for assignment. With two spots open on their Major League roster, the Brewers promoted pitcher Bryan Hudson and infielder Andruw Monasterio.
Last year, Monasterio made the Opening Day roster and started at third base. However, he did not stick in the Majors after hitting .208/.303/.272 with one home run and 16 RBI. It was a far drop off from the production he experience during his first stint with the Brewers in 2023, when he hit .259/.330/.348 with three home runs and 27 RBI.
In 30 games played for the Nashville Sounds this season, Monasterio is hitting .250/.346/.411 with four home runs and 11 RBI.
Bryan Hudson is back in Milwaukee after posting a 4.15 ERA with the team in 11 games to start the season. Last year, he was 6-1 with a 1.73 ERA in 43 games. It will be interesting to see what happens with Hudson going forward, as he has a 6.75 ERA with the Sounds in four games with them since being demoted.
