Milwaukee Brewers lose top prospect for at least 6-8 weeks

The Milwaukee Brewers have some talented prospects beginning the year in the minor leagues, in which several will make an impact in the big leagues this year. Jacob Misiorowski, Craig Yoho, and Logan Henderson are three pitchers names to know, whereas Caleb Durbin, Jeferson Quero, and Tyler Black are three position players to keep an eye on.

Of that group of position players, Durbin was sent down to work on his defense.  Quero injured his shoulder on Opening Day last year and will be eased back into games after undergoing season ending surgery after just one game in 2024. Lastly, Black was also optioned down, but he was one of the last players in contention for a MLB roster spot.

Unfortunately for Black, news has since surfaced that he fractured a bone in his wrist and will be out for at least the next 6-8 weeks.

Black, the Brewers sixth ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, fractured his hamate bone and will be out 6-8 weeks.  At best this timeline would have him returning around the middle to end of May/early June.  This is unfortunate injury news for a player who did not get a lot of playing time a season ago and was looking to establish himself early on this year.

Tyler Black will miss the start of the season at Class AAA Nashville. He fractured his right hamate bone and will be out 6 to 8 weeks.

Once healthy, it’s unclear if Black will have a path to the big leagues or not.  Jake Bauers was added to the 40-man roster to play backup first base + occasional designated hitter and pinch hitter.  This is the role that Black was competing for this spring.
