The Milwaukee Brewers have a few new faces in the organization as left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes and versatile infielder Caleb Durbin were acquired from the New York Yankees in exchange for closer Devin Williams. This was Matt Arnold’s first trade of the off-season, but could more be on the way? Here, we look at two potential trade candidates.
Could the Milwaukee Brewers be looking to shed more payroll?
When the Brewers and Yankees finalized the trade involving Devin Williams, Nestor Cortes, and Caleb Durbin, Milwaukee also received $4.5 million in cash. Williams and Cortes are both projected to earn $7.7 million in 2025, effectively meaning the Brewers acquired Cortes at a net cost of just $3 million. If the Brewers are looking to shed more salary, potential trade candidates could include Aaron Civale and Rhys Hoskins.
What makes Aaron Civale a good trade candidate?
What makes Rhys Hoskins a good trade candidate?
Rhys Hoskins’ first season in Milwaukee fell short of his usual standards, as he posted career lows in several offensive categories. However, this was his comeback year after missing an entire season due to an ACL tear, so a rebound to his usual form could be on the horizon. Hoskins chose to exercise his $18 million player option for 2025, making him the second-highest paid Brewer behind Christian Yelich. Given his potential and reputation of being a power hitting first baseman/designated hitter, it wouldn’t be surprising if Matt Arnold found a trade partner for Hoskins.
