When the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs squared off on March 30, 2023 to begin the new season the Brew Crew not only lost the first game of the year, but they lost third baseman Luis Urias to a hamstring injury. The injury occurred during his final at-bat in the ninth inning when he dove head first into first base while trying to beat out a ground ball.
A few days afterwards the Brewers announced the Luis Urias would miss 6-8 weeks due to the injury. He was subsequently transferred to the 60-day injured list and is eligible to come off as early as May 30.
Today, 7.5 weeks following the injury, the Brewers have announced that their third baseman could return as soon as shortly after memorial day. Sophia Minnaert reported that he will begin a rehab assignment with the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday May 23 and could rejoin the team on their next road trip. Milwaukee’s next road trip begins after Memorial day as they travel to Toronto on May 30.
Where will Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Luis Urias fit in once he returns?
The Brewers have used primarily Brian Anderson and Owen Miller at third base with Luis Urias out. Mike Brosseau has filled in as well, but between Brian Anderson’s hot start to the season and Owen Millers recent 13 game hitting streak they have been the primary beneficiaries of Urias’ hamstring injury.
When Luis Urias does return it’s likely that he will play a combination of third base and second base. He has a career .805 OPS against left-handed pitchers so having him play second base over Brice Turang seems like a likely scenario. As for at-bats against right-handed hitters it may come down to whether either him, Brian Anderson, or Owen Miller have the hottest bat.
It’s possible that the return of Luis Urias results in a player being optioned back to the minor leagues. Mike Brosseau does have two options remaining and he is likely in the hot seat with the impending return of Luis Urias. It will be interesting to see what happens once he returns, but more importantly hopefully he can help spark a currently slumping Milwaukee Brewers team.
